GUIDELINE AND REQUIREMENTS FOR
THE
ASSIGNMENT OF ISBN |
- A formal application for assignment of an ISBN made on the
letter headed paper of the Publisher, Author or Institution. All
letters should be sent to the address stated below.
- Attach the photocopy of the
Certificate of Incorporation of the Company.
- An indication whether the Author, Publisher or Institution are
new in the publishing industry and their expected output in the
next five years to enable the agency determine the appropriate
block of number to assign to them.
- Visual proof of the existence of the publication i.e. the user
requesting the assignment must produce type-set copy of the
manuscript. This is mandatory for authors and first time
publishers.
- An evidence to show full utilization of ISBN earlier assigned.
That is, each publisher, author or institution should forward a
list of their publications with the used ISBN to the National
Agency before requesting for new assignment of ISBN. In addition,
evidence of giving deposited three (3) copies of each publication
to the National Library as required by law.
- All fees charged for ISBN services are made payable to
National Library of Nigeria in Bank Draft or by cash
at the Headquarters or at our branch offices. Various fees charged are as follows:

- Publishers requesting for ISSN must
first verify their title with
the ISSN centre before publishing in order to avoid duplication of
title. (This is to secure a name reservation)
- Thereafter ensure that
(3)- private publication/
(10)- state government
publication/ (25)- federal
government publications maiden issues
are brought to the Nigerian ISSN Centre Abuja. (The maiden issues
are a prerequisite to obtaining an ISSN)
- Where it is in
e-format, the
URL Page and password must be
supplied. This is in line with the Legal Deposit provision of the
National Library Decree No. 29 of 1970.
- Forward a typed application on the letter headed paper of the
publishing firm/academic institution, attached to which, the
photocopy of the certificate of registration (in the case of a
private firm), obtained from the Cooperate Affairs Commission of
Nigeria.
- State clearly the scope of
the publication.
- State clearly the frequency of
your serial.
- State the name and address of the publisher. The address should
cite the actual location of your company/institution.
- Ensure the application is
