 :: Research & Development

 

Research and Development Department (RDD) is one of the Professional Departments in National Library of Nigeria. It is headed by a Director. It has three Divisions and a Unit under the office the Director; namely: Research and Publications Division (RPD); Development and Documentation Division (DDD) and Center for Advanced Library and Information Management (CALIM) Division and ICT Unit.

SERVICES RENDERED

Research and Publications Division

1. Planning and executing of the production of National Library publications of professional importance.

2. Promotion of research in the field of Information and Communication Technology.

3. Commissioning of researches in the area of library science and making their results available in the form of publications.

4. Provision of inquiry services to researchers and the general public about data and statistics of Library resources and uses within the country.

5. Provision of back-up for the publication and communication of research findings and results and for the exchange of professional ideas.

6. Recommending authentic research project proposals from Librarian in the country for possible sponsorship.

7. Conducting research on Library Science, Information Management and Information Technology.

8. Compilation and registration of on-going National researches.

9. Collecting National Library Statistics for necessary analysis and publication, and making them available for use within and outside the country.

10. Collecting, collating and processing of data on library statistics in Nigeria.

11. Training and re-training Librarians and other information specialist in the area of ICT and professional development.
 


Development and Documentation Division

1. Designing and articulating strategies for successful attainment of desired goals and objectives of the National Library of Nigeria.

2. Advising on appropriate strategies for planning Information services and products.

3. Providing guidelines for monitoring and evaluating the successful implementation of Information system so designed.

4. Indexing and Abstracting services.

5. Liaising with libraries that produce abstract with the view producing National Abstracts in selected area.
 


Centre for Advanced Library and Information Management (CALIM) Division 

1. Identifying training needs of professional staff for local and foreign programmes.

2. Identifying foundations, trusts, grants and other funding agencies for scholarship awards and short courses for staff within and outside the country.

3. Conducting information skill training for staff of other organizations.

4. Organizing ICT training for staff of other libraries.

5. Offering consultancy services to individuals and organizations in the areas of library science, information management and archival management.

6. Evaluation of Trade Information services of Chambers of Commerce in the country with a view to offering technical assistance.

7. Provision of translation services.

8. Development of strategies and guidelines for fund raising.

9. Identification of both local and International donors for bequeathing of their private (library) collection to the National Library of Nigeria.

10. Developing a self-financing plan for National Library products through meaningful publicity.

ICT UNIT

1. Undertaking systems Analysis and designs.

2. Inspection of systems and software procured by the organization.

3. Network Management and Administration.

4. Organising computer appreciation and application training for staff and students on Industrial Attachment.

5. Participating in training programmes organized for staff of other libraries.

6. Computer Programming.
